dr. john > rammstein, part deux

It’s creepy, it’s a trip and it’s way better than Rammstein. It’s also over 5 minutes long. I realize this is about 4:50 past your attention span, but do yourself a favor and watch it.

Dr. John > Rammstein. Hands Down.

So technically this doesn’t qualify as classic rock, but it’s old so I’m writing about it. Dr. John is a musician who started in New Orleans in the 50’s. Born Mac Rebennack, he took the stage name Dr. John from a famous early 1800’s voodoo practitioner of the same name. I’d describe his style as a mix of barrelhouse piano, funk and R&B; all with a distinct New Orleans flavor. His earlier stuff also had a sort of psychedelic tinge to it. Check out his 1st album, “Gris-Gris”. If you’ve ever heard Paul Simon’s album “Graceland”, “Gris-Gris” has the same African influence, but with a lot of “Timothy Leary visits N’awlins” thrown in. Here’s Dr. John in another one of those strange old music videos:
